The first limited edition “Instruments” that Bell & Ross released in 2007 were the Orange versions of the the BR 01 and BR 03 92 and 94. After numerous other limited edition BR models - including the Phantoms, Reds, and Blues - the BR 01-97 Orange pays homage to the Orange dials that started it all. Other then the colour of its hands and hour markers the BR 01 97 has something else in common with the original Orange limited editions. Only 250 of them will be produced instead of the 500-watch production of all the other coloured dials.

The main feature of this watch is the dial. The Orange hour markers are painted on rather then applied like they are on the regular version of the BR-01 97. This adds to the military look of the watch. Because of the amount of Superluminova used to paint the dial, the hour makers and hands are highly photo-luminescent. The orange “LTD” emblem at four o’clock demarcates the watch as a limited editions. The power reserve indicator, as its name suggests, indicates how much charge is left in the movement’s mainspring. If you wear the watch every day, the power reserve will probably always hover in the “HIGH” zone. When the little hand is in the “LOW” zone, its time to wind the watch by hand. I often use power reserve models to demonstrate the importance of winding automatic watches by hand rather then just shaking them. When shaking the watch the power reserve barely moves, but with the crown you can get the indicator in the “HIGH” zone in seconds.

The stainless steel 46mm square case is blackened via Bell & Ross’ proprietary carbon finish. The watch’s serial number is etched into the case back deeply enough to show the natural colour of the steel. The case is 10.5mm thick, which makes it pretty low profile especially compared to the thicker chronograph models. The watch comes with the BR rubber strap as well as a secondary nylon and Velcro band as do all other BR models. The straps is easy to change using the specialized tools that Bell & Ross gives with every watch. The screw head is hexagonal. This eliminates any slippage that may happen with flat head screw drivers.

The Orange Power Reserve and Big Date “Instruments” offer nice, practical complications, and are less expensive then the limited edition Chronographs that are currently available. Only 250 of each model will be produced instead of the usual 500. In a few words, the BR-01 97 Orange is a find. It is a special watch that you will not see on many other people’s wrists or plastered in every magazine ad and editorial.
